In 2008, Judy Chicago began work on a five year project with the legendary Landfall Press, founded by Jack Lemon. Titled A Retrospective in a Box, this suite of ten prints involves seven images surveying her career along with this statement explaining the project and an embellished title and colophon page, all of which are encased in a specially designed, embossed and hand-fabricated box. Each image represents a significant period in the development of her work. A Retrospective in a Box provides viewers with a glimpse into five decades of artmaking during which Chicago has tackled numerous universal themes in a variety of media. As diverse as these might be, they are linked by her commitment to accessible images in which the simplicity of the form belies the complexity of the meaning. Moreover, Chicago selected the techniques that are most suited to what she wishes to convey. With Landfall as a superb partner, Chicago has used lithography to synthesize a career-long multitude of ideas and images.
